About fe-mini-ism

  • Lotte van den Hoogen (1994) presents her project fe-mini-ism, with which she wishes to provoke a connection through sharing personal stories. In workshops these stories are shared and communicated through zines. These zines are then reproduced and distributed via a former Tampon machine.

The project demonstrates how interaction between readers and zine-makers can contribute to creating a shared understanding. These moments of shared understanding and connectivity bring about a small-scale movement within feminism according to the artist: fe-mini-ism, the feminism within small gestures. A small exchange within the greater context and struggles faced by feminism, but important nonetheless.

The tampon dispenser refers to a space where a lot of female interaction takes place: the women’s restroom – the perfect place to start a mini-revolution.

  • The workshop is a vital part of the project where the content of the machine is made. The zines should be made by the local community, so with every new location come new workshops. The workshop is free and accessible to all, so that the content of the machine properly reflects the community around it.

All participants are asked to make a zine about an experience/life story regarding feminist themes that they think can benefit someone else. This experience/story can be something life changing or just something that happened to them when they walked to the bus stop that morning.

These zines are reproduced and put in a little package along with a tampon and a little surprise.

  • ZINE (n): pronounced "zeen"

A zine (short for fanzine and magazine) is a self published, often photocopied, non-commercial print work. Although photocopy and print remain the most popular media for zines, they can be made and bound in a variety of ways. Zine are sometimes handwritten, drawn, tied together by strings, stapled or just folded together. And that’s the great thing about it: there isn’t a wrong way to make a zine! It’s completely up to you.

Why Zines Matter: zines can provide a safe and independent platform for expression for marginalized and underrepresented voices.

Anyone can make a zine, it's not about making a perfect piece of art, it's about self-expression, telling your story and sharing your emotions. About giving someone a peek inside your head and sharing your perspective. Whether in words or images. Because of its small and easy format, it allows even the smallest voices to be heard.
